Transformation of a private appartment one hour north of Berlin.
The typical shape of the roof found in that area called "Krüppelwalmdach" was made visible and tangible on the inside. This space is defined by the structure and shape of that particular roof and at the same time it is a space that is detached and could either be floating between the clouds or stand in the middle of a field firmly on the ground.

The house is located between a heavy traffic road on the north, and a beautiful wild garden on the south. In the 1920ies when the house was built, the road was much more important being the represantive side, as the garden being a mere necessity. Thus the house is oriented in it's spacial organisation towards the road. The apparent wish to orient the livingspaces towards the garden and the south, made it necessary to substencially change the inner organisation. But instead of just turnig the back towards the road, the two sides are tied together under the big roof, giving even a quality to something that was considered having no quality at all.

Eventhough the visible materials are new, almost all of the substructre was made useing materials already available from the former construction. In that way, costs were reduced and the need for new material kept to a minimum. The radiators, faucets and the toilet were cleaned, repared if necessary, and reinstalled, A door, mirrors, and a big closet were adapted and embedded in the new design as if they have always been there.

Almost all of the construction work has been done in d-i-y by Atelier Thomas W. Meyer. Plumbing, electricity, adjustments on the timber construction and the insertion of new windows were done by contractors.

2020, project

In 1998 the small backyardbuilding was transformed from an abandoned building into a beautiful small house with kitchen livingroom and bedroom on the groundfloor, an extra two bedrooms and a bathroom on the first floor. After living there for over 20 years, the wish for a stronger connetion with the garden came up. The entrance was too small and the toilet on the groundfloor, directly behind the kitchencounter, was a little unpleasant for guests while invited over for dinner. The intervention ist very small and precise: The entranceannex in the middle of the building ist opened to the livingroom and to the garden with a huge window. The kitchen is moved into the living area and the former kitchenspace transfomed into a worthy entrée with adjacent toilet. The old windows and entrancedoor, wich are all still in perfect condition, are relocatet to their new dedicated positions.

Haus Buser
/////////
private comission
2018, 1st. phase completed

Refurbishment of a row-farmerhouse dating back to 1770. The house was heavily altered in the 1960ies and 80ies in a way that atmospherically there was nothing left that reminded of it's rural context. The goal of the refurbishment is thus to give the house back an atmosphere and character.

By clarifying it's inherent structure of the alternation of utility space and living space, the house get's back it's typical contextual character.

By a strong material presence and the play of bright and dark spaces, the house get's back it's atmosphere.

By adding a second exit through the former stable on the south fassade, the house transforms from a dead-end to a place where life can run trhough.

The refurbishment will be executed in multiple phases. Some of the work done in d-i-y.

Atelier Hürst
/////////
d.i.y. and upcycling project
2019, completed

An atelier made from reclaimed material for a painter. It is a temporary construction that will first be assembled on an industrial yard. The atelier is selfbuilt by Atelier Thomas W. Meyer and help from friends.

From the material given, a new structure was designed to fit the artitsts need for tall but intimate spaces. Yet the spaces have large openings with translucent material, which give a soft and very even light to the inside. When the large windows are opened the spaces transform from intimate into a pavillion like structure that is rather a covered outside space than an inside space. The atelier consists of three spaces that differ in size and spatial quality. The three spaces are aligned in an enfilade which gives the atelier its very long and narrow footprint.

2016, international open competition

Competition for an extension of the "Neue Nationalgalerie" in Berlin. The extension should give an answer to the immanent problem of the site: architectonic singularities stand together but alone. There is no impression of a whole.

The proposal is thus very simple: a central flat square gives one unifying meaning to the singularities and a big Facade to the west gives the counterweight to the huge library in the east. Now the forum is made.

Dreiblatttisch

2014, dining table

This tables beauty lies not only in its shape but also in the strong connection between construction and form. The shape, a tribute to Max Bill’s Dreirundtisch is taken a step further through the use of massive wood and a construction that only allows wood joints without screws or glue.

The table splits up into fifeteen parts that can be put together as many times as wanted. When the table is put together all the parts join to a single form. The joints between the three leaves change shape and size caused by the shrinking and extension of the wood throughout the seasonal changes.

Die Königin der Nacht
2013, Master Thesis at ETH Zürich, Professor: Annette Spiro

In the 1980’s space for alternative artist and actors was rare in Zurich. They were fighting side by side for a progressive cultural city.
At that time the Theaterspektakel was incepted and the plays were presented in circus tents. The circus-like atmosphere has conserved until today.

Since the inception, the Theaterspektakel advanced quickly to a worldwide rennomated Theatrefestival starring internationally acting groups. At the same time jesters and beertables occupy the festival site and help to create the improvised atmosphere of the Theaterspektakel. This atmosphere is the inspiration for the Theater „Die Königin der Nacht“.

The temporary theater is like an enourmous stage with the scenery on the inside leaving the construction visible on the outside.
The inner wrapping provides the threshold to the world of the theatre a world of illusion and wonder. On this fabric video projections can be made and thus transform the whole room into a enormous scene. Sight slots provide insight for the standing places and include the peeping people into the scenery.
